Companies and researchers are investing in developing the wearable device, including Google (glass), FitBit, JawBone, Fossil, Nike, Garmin and Apple. Scientists of University of Manitoba, Canada, recently published a report in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces showing the possibility of creating wearable device with stretchable sensor by using chewing gum. The unique technology made of gum and carbon nanotubes will allow the device to track the smallest movement of wearer, including mood, heart rate, breathing, steps and sleep cycles. The path to finding the solution for stretchable material without compromising on sensing may not be elegant. The research team are required to chew gums for half an minutes before washing them with ethanol. Later the team added carbon nanotubes as sensing material.
Good news for the team, here are five benefits of chewing gum:
- Improve memory
- Reduce stress
- Manage weight
- Improve digestion (as long as you don’t swallow it)
- Improve oral health
