In recent years, there are articles online saying that “sugar is the new smoking”.  Is it true?  There are various evidence showing that obesity is the cause of many diseases, and sugar plays an important role in becoming obese.

Whether sugar is the new alcohol or tobacco, a study of University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center showed that sugar intake increases the risk of having breast cancer.  Scientists detected when sugar (dietary sucrose and fructose) got into the body, it increased the production of 12-LOX (12-lipoxygenase) and a fatty acid 12-HETE which led to breast cancer tumour growth and metastasis to the lungs.  However scientists have not found out the method sugar induces the productions of the 12-LOX signal and 12-HETE.  The study was published today in Cancer Research.

Do you know that there are four teaspoons of sugar equivalent in a can of Heinz tomato soup?  There are a lot of “hidden sugar” in our daily food consumption.
